Botanically Pinus Nigra Laricio, is a plant belonging to the family of Pinacee. Resistant to temperature changes and able to grow even in difficult soil.

The sovereign tree of the Sila is a particular species, autochthonous, and during the various Glaciations, the black pine Nordic species, extended southwards.

As the glaciers retreated, many specimens remained in the southern mountains an evolution that led them to assume peculiar characters. The larch pine is more slender compared to the black pine and in fact reaches an average height of 35 meters. In addition, compared to black pine, it provides better quality timbers.

The leaves are dark green, needle-shaped , and have a length of about ten centimeters. The pine larch is a species that adapts very well to temperature changes. It can be found anywhere from 800 meters up to 2,000, and undergoes regularly remarkable temperature changes that can range from 30 degrees and beyond in summer, to-15 or less in winter.

It bears well also the numerous and abundant snowfalls, and is able to grow also on rocky and granite soils. Although this subspecies is widespread in Corsica, Calabria and Sicily, the largest diffusion is found on the Silane plateau in Calabria (Pinus nigra, laricio var. calabrica), where there are extensive pine forests described by Pliny, Livius and Virgil, so much so that they commonly call it Pino Silano.
