Botanically Fagus Sylvatica, beech is a plant with a long life that can even reach 150 years! Native to most Western European countries and the north. In Italy, they are located in large areas ranging from Sicily to the Alps passing through the Apennines. However, it is not present in its natural state in Sardinia, even though it is cultivated there.
In the territory of the Sila Calabra, groups of beech are present, which constitutes the predominant species in the forests having, found the ecological environment more suited to their needs. It is found mixed with the white spruce, in groups more or less numerous, which tends to avoid the ridges and areas subjected to wind. In these areas it’s seen a regression of beech in favor of the spruce tree which is found to have an abundant natural renewal.
